Peter Thornton MBE Director, Development
Peter Thornton is an MCA Class One Master Mariner Unlimited, RYA Yachtmaster and AYF Coastal Skipper. Having had a high profile and successful fifteen years serving in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary coupled with a love for yachting, he has navigated ships and yachts both on paper and digitally across the world. He was the first RFA navigator to gain digital accreditation through ECDIS and navigate paperless. Awarded the Captain Farmer's prize for coming top of the Royal Navy's specialist navigation course in 2007 and attained a Post Graduate Diploma, Distinction in Navigational Studies through Plymouth University. His last appointment in the RFA was to Flag Officer Sea Training based in Devonport, in which he was the RFA staff navigator, one of seven specialist RN navigators responsible for bridge and navigation sea training of all RN and RFAs around the world as well as to Foreign Navies visiting FOST.
On leaving this appointment and the RFA in March 2010, his background and expertise in paper and digital navigation, coupled with the advanced training of bridge teams at sea allows him to be fully aware of the complexities of various digital navigation systems. Importantly, his certification also enables him to maintain his currency by delivering large yachts, both motor and sail which will subsequently ensure that he stays at the forefront of electronic navigation developments. He is a member of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners, a committee member of the SW branch of the Nautical Institute and an Associate Fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation.
