A colleague of mine has been conducting a generic course at another institution this week, at the same time as I have been undergoing instruction with ECDIS Ltd. In contrast to the ECDIS Ltd course, his lasted only three days and was taught on normal PCs using a legacy software version. Having been an instructor of different technologies in the past, I am sympathetic with the perceived requirement to ‘cram’ course content, but I would not have been half as confident operating these systems at sea after a three day course, as I am now. It was a well structured course; very professionally presented with the latest of equipment.
